Historic Preservation Commission · August 27, 2026

The Kroehler Mansion is on the agenda again, and this time it’s about color.

This is a short meeting with one substantive item. No contracts, no dollars, no eminent domain. Just a century-old mansion and a dispute over whether some field changes to its windows, roof shingles, and front porch should get the commission’s blessing.

🔦 The 3 items worth your attention

Only one item clears the bar here, so this section has one.

The owners of the Kroehler Mansion want to amend a Certificate of Appropriateness that was already in place (COA 20-2321, issued back in 2020) to allow changes that were made or proposed in the field rather than by the original plan. Specifically: window color, roof shingle color, and the front porch. For a designated historic property, that kind of exterior change isn’t a formality. The commission’s job is to weigh whether the changes fit the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for historic preservation, and field changes that deviate from an existing approval can be a real sticking point. Commissioners could require reversal, or they could sign off. Either way, the decision shapes what the mansion looks like going forward. (E-1)
